Thursday’s HS Rewind: milestone win for North Meck coach

North Mecklenburg boys basketball coach Duane Lewis made history Thursday night.

Lewis’ Vikings beat Hough 76-51 in the Queen CIty 3A/4A conference tournament semifinals at Hough, and Lewis won his 500th career game.

Lewis is believed to be just the third boys Mecklenburg County coach to hit 500 wins, among those who spent the bulk of their career in the area.

Longtime Charlotte Latin coach Jerry Faulkner, who started coaching in 1967 and retired last year, won more than 900 games. The late Charles McCullough of West Charlotte won nearly 600 games at his alma mater from 1960-93.

On the girls side, Myers Park coach Barbara Nelson, who won seven state titles at Providence Day, is 763-289 with two more state titles at Myers Park.

Lewis, 53, is joining some elite company.

“I have the best job around,” said Lewis, whose team will play rival Chambers in Friday’s conference championship game. “North has been a great place full of great people. Mr. (Jimmy) Poole (the former North Meck principal) took a chance on me when I was young. There were a lot of heavyweights trying to get this job.”

Lewis replaced legendary coach Leroy Holden 24 years ago after working for two years as the Vikings junior varsity coach. Holden won more than 400 games and took the Vikings to their first state championship game in 1987.

Lewis, who played. for Holden at North Meck, led the Vikings to their first state championship in 2005. The Vikings lost in the 2006 state finals, but were declared co-state champions with Lumberton in 2020 after COVID shut down high school sports and prevented the state final from being played.

“I’ve been at this for a long time and the game has changed,” Lewis said, “but that’s what old people say. It’s a lot faster and there’s a lot more offense. I love defense and when I started, games were in the 40s and 50s. Now it’s changed with the 3-point line.”

One thing that hasn’t changed? Lewis said he thinks kids are the same.

“They want to be coached up and held accountable,” Lewis said. “And I’ve been blessed, in that I’ve had a lot of good ones. I hope I made a difference in a bunch of their lives. I mean, wins and losses are great, but that’s what matters. We have this thing, ‘Viking For Life,’ and that means something to me. I love this job. I’m a North Meck guy.”
