Here are the Charlotte Observer’s high school athlete of the week, as voted by readers.

BOYS: Christ The King basketball player Marco Tampoya, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, scored 27 points in a 75-46 win over Langtree Charter, Jan. 13.

Tampoya had 19 points in a 47-46 win at Bradford Prep, Jan. 11. Tampoya also had 14 points in a 48-47 loss at Lincoln Charter, Jan. 10.

GIRLS: West Cabarrus’ Shariah White, a 5-foot-9 freshman, scored 15 points, had seven rebounds, three steals and two assists in a 53-40 win over Mooresville Jan. 11.

White also had 11 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and three steals in a 49-44 victory at Mount Tabor Jan. 14.

Langston Wertz Jr. is an award-winning sports journalist who has worked at the Observer since 1988. He’s covered everything from Final Fours and NFL to video games and Britney Spears. Wertz — a West Charlotte High and UNC grad — is the rare person who can answer “Charlotte,” when you ask, “What city are you from.”
